COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Linda McMullen has a myriad of experiences, ranging from teacher to guidance counselor, that laid a solid foundation for her educational consulting practice.  She remains actively involved in college admissions organizations (e.g., NACAC, SACAC), and has served on numerous committees where she gained firsthand knowledge of the college admissions world. Moreover, she is a member of IECA, a professional organization of specialists who advise families on educational options. These, coupled with visits to assess college campuses, have allowed her to gain insight into the "real world" college experience and make enlightening recommendations to college-bound students. The culmination of these travels is an informed guide to help your child decide on the best school for him or her. (Warning: this may mean choosing a school different from the "one all my friends are planning to attend" or a parent's alma mater). How does this work? The process begins with several in-depth evaluations of your student in order to understand his or her interests, goals,  strengths and special needs. This personal assessment includes the administration of 3 interest inventories, a review of educational records, as well as written feedback from both parents and student via questionnaires.  The latter is particularly informative, as many teens may see themselves quite differently than parents/peers. Linda narrows a list of over 3000 colleges/universities to a feasible "starter list" for the student.  Further dialogue serves to expand/contract this.  Then begins a "domino effect" of sorts, as Linda provides insight on how to effectively interview/tour a campus, brainstorms essay ideas, educates on NACAC ethical guidelines, interacts on how to best show the application, explains what goes on in committee, and answers other questions to best prepare you and your student for the college selection and admission process. The primary benefit to Linda's approach is that it is highly individualized. As you can attest, your student is unlike anyone else and deserves an educational experience that meets his or her needs, be it a large state university or a small private college. The college experience is one where your student learns, experiences new aspects of life, and ultimately decides upon a career.
